War causes Cartwheel and her auntie to flee their country. But even though they are safe in their new home, she feels disoriented and lonely until another girl in the park reaches out to her. Over time, she learns the language and is able to read, surrounding herself with a word blanket that is every bit as comforting as the blanket.

The watercolor and oil paint illustrations and the text perfectly depict her feelings of isolation and uncertainty in a new place with unfamiliar words and practices. Outstanding word choices such as these [When I went out, it was like standing under a waterfall of strange sounds. The waterfall was cold. It made me feel alone (unpaged) and Soon they didnt sound so cold and sharp anymore. They started to sound warm and soft. I was weaving a new blanket (unpaged)] vividly depict her feelings about the words in her new language that leave her discombobulated and unable to communicate with others.

Originally published in Australia, this picture book is a vivid reminder of the power words have to bring us closer or to keep us separated.
